Planning

Let's face it, long haul flights have always been every traveler's nightmare. So why not take a detour and plan ahead? Taking a detour will reduce the level of travel fatigue by dividing long hauls into smaller segments of short/medium haul flights.
Having more flights means you will have more flexibility in travel, you can explore places you've never been or visit family/friends you wish to see.

After some careful planning and digging, taking into account loyalty programmes, discounts, upgrades and credit card utilisation, I shortlisted a few options.

Possible Choices -
A. MEL - SYD - HNL                                Qantas
B. MEL - AKL - HNL                                Air New Zealand
C. MEL - SYD - AKL - HNL                    QF/LA/HA
D. MEL - HNL                                           Jetstar

Option A - Pros
  • Plenty of Qantas points are up for grabs, this could get me more upgrades and discounts in the future.
  • Very good access to airport lounges.
  • There are dozens of domestic flights from MEL to SYD per day, you can always find a connection you want. Very relaxed connection schedule.
Option A - Cons
  • Long haul flight from SYD to HNL - The flight time has not been significantly reduced and can be uncomfortable on the A330 Aircraft.
Qantas A330

Option B - Pros
  • Plenty of Airpoint Dollars are up for grabs, this could get me more upgrades and discounts in the future.
  • 787 Dreamliner Flight - Superior Cabin Pressure
  • I can visit my hometown.
Option B - Cons
  • Air New Zealand has scheduled maintenance on 787-9 aircrafts, the aircraft isn't confirmed.
  • Both MEL-AKL, AKL-HNL are medium length flights, increasing chances of jet fatigue.
    Air New Zealand 787

Option C - Pros
  • Very good accessibility of lounges in Australia when flying Qantas and One World affiliated airlines.
  • I can visit my home town
  • 787 Dreamliner Flight - Superior Cabin Pressure
  • Good amounts of Qantas points earned.
  • Shorter flights - More rest breaks, less chances of jet fatigue.
  • Chance to Hawaiian Airlines for the time.
Option C - Cons
  • Can be expensive
Hawaiian Airlines A330

LATAM 787

Option D - Pros
  • Can earn a small amount of Qantas Points
  • It is relatively cost effective
  • Lounge Access in Melbourne.
  • Direct flight, no transit required.
  • 787 Dreamliner Flight - Superior Cabin Pressure
Option D - Cons
  • Jetstar is a budget airline, Business class is equivalent of Premium Economy of most national carriers while costing more than most Premium Economy Flights.
  • Long Haul - Can be exhausting even flying in the highest class due to the budget nature.
  • Previously I have had bad experiences with the airline.
    Jetstar 787

Decision

After some careful consideration and planning, I chose Option C as it was the most viable and comfortable route for this trip.
